Worn out bits...
Suspension bushes, driveline splines, a frame balljoint, etc.
Sorry for this probably lame question but...
What causes the very loud clunk (92 RR classic) when I take the auto transmission out of park? I also get a discernible "lurch".
Thanks in advance.

I get the clunk when I change out of park -even if the car is stationary and its very loud.
You're likely resting on the park pin in the transmission. It is relatively small and will eventually break.
When you park; put the TX into neutral, apply handbrake, take your foot off brake and when it is resting on the park brake then finally put the TX into park.
Thanks guys ,great advise Dan I will start doing that...well try....old habits are hard to break...unlike car parts!
Thanks B4theTV....I really am quite photogenic ,aren't I?
only when in Las Vegas![]()
Does it clunk if you floor it at 60ks an hour then quicklu close the throttle? I bet its wear in the t/case chain
If it is the park pin then perhaps you need to adjust your handbrake.
If you put your handbrake on when you are in neutral (on a slope) does the handbrake hold the car? Any movement will put load on the pin.
I do as Dan says but I have a manual anyway. However it is nice to know if your handbrake is capable of holding the car and this is a good way to keep up to date on that. I know my handbrake doesn't stay adjusted correctly for too long
