Research on the transfer box tells me:
* the LT230 was fitted to all Discovery models up to 1998
* the 28D prefix seems consistent with an LT230

The overhaul manual for Discovery model year 1995, preface page for the LT230T states:
"This transfer box is fitted to the following models:
Serial No. Prefixes: 20D, 22D, 32D, 43D, 47D,
56D, 57D, 58D, 59D, and 60D - Defender
Serial No. Prefixes: 28D, 34D, 41D, 42D -Discovery
Serial No. Prefixes: 14D, 15D, 20D, 26D, 27D, 28D
and 30D - Range Rover Classic"

So I guess it was in the first model year Rangie to have an LT230.

If it was the first, then I would want to check whether it was auto or manual. Manual would have a 1.211:1 high range, and auto, Chrysler 727 would have a 1.001:1 high range.

1.001:1 is a useless ratio for anything but a big block Petrol/ diesel or a turbo Isuzu conversion...

This ratio should be written on a sticker next to the serial number...If a pressure washer hasn't blown it off.

easy, its out of a landrover...........


pretty much the only thing that counts is the gear ratio the rest of it pretty much bolts to anything else that had an lt230 in it, you might have to change the PTO plate or the handbrake adaptor to get it to work but work it will.

LT230R i think, was infront of the early LT77 and auto's in a classic RR
