Don't feel sorry for those that like the 2.25 Diesel, we poor souls are laughing all the way to the bank when it comes time to rebuild our 2.25, can bore the block, fit New pistons and rings replace all bearings, gaskets and seals, for the cost of 1 Injector from a TD5 and put it all together in an afternoon. Nothing like simplicity in an engine, very nostalgic, Regards Frank.

Get a hold of the Leyland Bros. West to East trip across the widest part of Australia, done in the 60's, they broke a few diffs, but didnt have trouble finding replacements on some of the stations they traversed.
You can pick them up at any video store or seller for about $26, it has 2 discs, one of the original trip and one of the 40th anniversary trip, good viewing, Regards Frank.

It was more based on a comment that those with Tdi's had a crush on Pippa from Home and Away rather than the motor itself.

I remember one of their original episodes where they did a clutch and had one dropped from a plane.

    Head Tensioning on TD5?

Is head tensioning something that should be done to a TD5 on a regular basis? If so how is it done?

what you do with a td5 head is

    LEave it alone....

if its running and its not eating or filling the coolant then the head is good.

if you disturb the headbolts proper you have to replace them.
if you replace the headbolts you have to replace the headgasket.

The headbolts are angle torqued from a nominal torque setting by an additional 270+ degrees which equates to RRFT and Id stake my left nut on the fact that its something like buggerall short of stripping/snapping the bolts or the threads in the block.

Ask Auke about what happens if you mess with the head unnessicarily.

Lets see, at the end of the day:

-: you spend more on the vehical to start with,
-: tyres and parts as well as fluids all cost more,
-: Mods normally cost more and a lot less can be done legally,
-: Insurance in most cases costs more.
    Hmm, intriguing.

Mate, I don't doubt that you have strongly held opinions on the issue of this thread, but be aware you do come across as a litle evangelical and it does appear you are trying to 'convert' people. I don't mean this aggressively, just making you aware that what you might mean when you type, and how it is perceived at the readers end, may vary.

Just a note on the above quote from your post...

    Why would tyres cost more on a TD5 than a 300Tdi ?
Also why would fluids cost more?
And parts - well it would depend which parts surely ?

Again with the modifications - it would depend which modifications one is talking about - and why could less be done legally ?

Lastly - the insurance issue - well, yeah ! As you also mentioned you pay more for a TD5 than a 300Tdi (being that the TD5 is a newer car) , so it stands to reason that you'd insure it for more, and it follows that the insurance premium would be higher. This is to do with the age / value of the vehicle and nothing whatsoever to do with the engine !
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    I just wish I had enough $ to justify a TD5 over a 300tdi at the moment. There's a big jump in $ from 300 to td5....
