I´m having say problem as lou has already said, not been back to dealer yet, we only run on first speed, really notice on way home from work when have been sat in traffic
The sad thing is we are all going to go SOFT with these comfy new Defenders... And I used to think I was a hard man.
"Air con not working properly... boo hoo... only cools to 24 degrees, not 22... oh woe is me..." - it's only been a couple of months and we're all becoming pussies!
Hi all,
2 yrs since the last post on this but I was searching for an answer to my aircon problem, this is the exact issue I am having, and the defender is only 3 months old.
It shows searching does help sometimes, if anyone has any updates to this I would be grateful, it goes in for its first service soon so I will get them to look at it, do you think the dealer will know what the problem is once I explain it seeing as this is not a new issue?
thanks
Patrick
funny this thread should be brought back up, as twice now we have spoken to the dealer in regards to our aircon and we dont think its right it just doesn't seem to get cold.
However we were told its getting down to 5 degrees when they test it so its fine.
However I feel this thread is a bit of proof...as if you note my post on page 3 its say that I use it on the first setting. Now I have to have it on the 2nd and sometimes the 3rd and I still dont feel like its cooling that well....yes its cold right in front of the vent if you put your hand next to it but it doesn't feel like its reaching the driver.
I'm now wondering whether they are testing the air con in there air conditioned garage...of course its going to read cold!!!

db, this is exactly what I am getting, when it is cold it freezes my elbow, then about ten minutes into the trip it stars to heat up in the car and the humidity builds up, I check the aircon and it is not very cold air, you can feel it on your hand but has no effect on your face, you turn it up and all it does is increase the fan speed, the air is still warm, I was thinking that it was the change in weather but I see through your post it is not.
One other thing, sometimes before it conks out it is so cold it looks like the aircon unit has been turned into a fog machine. I was a bit worried when I first seen this, not sure if I still should be..
cheers
Patrick

The symptoms you describe are same as occoured to my 98 disco.
Ultimatley found broken TXV bulb and had to replace it.. long tedious job as the whole dash has to come out. Get an A/C bloke to put his guages on the system and he will be able to diagnose the problem. The symptoms alone without pressure readings point to several scenarios low on gas as JC points out, moisture in the system ( or both ) thermostat issues ( unlikley). As it is cooling at the begining there is obviously some refrigerant in the system.
Well to follow-up this thread - my A/C has been fine since the 2nd Tx valve was replaced. There must have been a bad batch of them as the dealer said there was another vehicle that required two goes at getting it fixed. The next summer I asked the dealer to check it again as I thought it was better but still not properly cold. All tested OK and we put it down to the colour of the vehicle (Stornoway Grey). Scallops' Defender is white and feels generally cooler to be in. This would back up peoples' comments that the air is cold coming out of the vents but just not that cold further back.
Another thing I have noticed is that the system seems to push much more air through the fixed, centre vents to the rear seat than you get out of the eyeball vents. When travelling alone I usually point both the left & right hand vents at me and this fixes things.
