How about easing up a bit fella's?

400HPongas and Bombardier... You 2 will obviously never agree and its becoming personal...

Look at the filtermags as what they are... Another tool, nothing more....

Do they separate Fe from the engine oil? Yes...
Does this prevent further damage from the Fe moving through the engine? Yes...
Does it remove the original cause of the Fe? No...

For those not having oil analysis done, could it help them detect excessive Fe in their engine, leading them to diagnose the issue and fix it for a reduced cost? YES...

Just like the layman uses the magnet on sump and gearbox plugs as a quick check for rampant 'free radicals' in their diff/gearbox.

Would I fit one? I dont have one, but would fit one if I had one here.
It doesnt hurt to have the extra 'check'.

You've taken all the fun out of the thread.

I think your conclusions are generally what members conclusions will be

    But how do we check?
Once you've cut the filter open, you've just created a whole lot more stray Fe particles.

I think the sump plug magnet is the best tool for this job.

Umm, hammer, chisel, tin snips, can opener, I can think of lots of ways of opening a filter to see whats inside... You are not going to find anything coarser than your pump inlet screen so you can discount scraps of tin. Magnetic sump plugs will find lumps teeth and leftover nuts etc.

The reason I come on to this forum is to ask questions and try to better my understanding of things that I may not understand. I certainly don't come on here to have someone rip the pi$$ ou of me for not knowing more about engines than they do.
I suggest that before you post any more of your self gratifying statments that you sit back and read them through again. If this is what you do for a living then I most certainly wouldn't be giving you any of my business.
I may not be a technical contributor as such but since joining this forum a number of years ago I beleive I have been a worthy member to the extent where I have even donated items free of charge to other forum users and even posted then from Dubai to Australia free of charge.

    .................................................. .................................................. ...

Yesterday I had the oils changed on both diffs, the transmission and the transfer box. All have magnetic drain plugs and judging by the small metal particles stuck to each of them they certainly appear to be doing their job.... so why someone would say that magnets don't benefit the engine is beyond me.
400Pongas don't answer any of my posts please since I find you arrogant and offensive.

Does it remove the original cause of the Fe? No...

I happen to believe it does.

If you use it from the start of the engines life then all the little bits will not be there to start the ball rolling.

It is not a personal thing.

I only wish that those who are looking for something and ask can have their experiences respected and not have others put off asking for fear of being belittled.

This product was presented in the aspect that if you fitted it .... Your motor will be saved from THE major cause of wear & tear .... This part I don't believe & still don't

HOWEVER .... Streaky's Post got me thinking .....

and that is common on most motors .... The cam & the lifters do wear out ... and once that steel hits the soft metals ... it's stuck there

And the way Tombie explains it .... Correct ... The "ordinary folk in the street" does not have access to oil analysis / dial gauges or the monies to do exploratory engine breakdowns, to check for problems ...

But we do have a pair of tin snips ....

and THIS is how the questions ARE being answered!!

So my thoughts are .... I don't want to pay for earth magnets, as I have a whole heap of dead ordinary stereo speaker's hanging on my shelf, in which I can just salvage the magnet for FREE

    So my question is ....
Is there any harm in just hanging one at the end of the oil filter? (Yes, this is a real question)

Why does it have to be a Earth magnet???
