On my D1 it only shifts to 4th at around 75/80 kph just before the converter locks , i would think the D2 is similar ?
Hi folks,
I have a 2001 Disco 2 V8 that may be developing issues. I thought I should get some guidance from the group before starting any major diagnostic work.
Most of the time when driving under no load at 60 km/h the transmission will properly shift into top gear with the motor ticking over at about 1500rpm.
The issue that I have is that sometimes the auto transmission is very reluctant to shift into top gear, instead staying in 3rd & revving at 2000rpm at 60km/hr. Usually when this occurs, it will not change up until 80km/h (under very mild acceleration). This will obviously be adversely affecting my fuel consumption.
The only pattern that I have been able to discern so far is that this always happens during hot weather. The symptoms have appeared during stop - start city driving, and after sitting with the motor idling in traffic. Another sure fire way to bring it on is to drive the car until it is hot, then turn it off & allow it to "heat soak" for a while before driving again.
Can anyone give me some guidance about what the problem may be & where I should start looking for gremlins?
Thanks in advance!
SmokyBear

Im pretty sure the shift pattern is governed by the computer on the D2 so I would say you may have a trans temp sensor issue if anything.
Im not all that sure on those as the electrickery covers up most of any mechanical issues.
It shouldnt be loading up (lugging) the engine in 4th or lockup and will more than likely use less fuel holding 3rd and reving a little more rather than lugging the engine as well.
The D2 V8 will shift into O/D lock up at about 60k, (1500rpm), under light throttle. This is normal. BUT, the change in performance when hot isn't. I would also suggest that the Airflow meter outputs to the ECU also effect the trans computer, as it helps with engine/ trans load signals etc. A faulty AF meter can cause probs with Td5 shift quality too. It may be the trans could do with a service and presssure check, take it to someone who knows these 4HP22E boxes to get this done. Where are you located?
One more thing, are you certain it isn't in sport mode at times? This will allow late shifting etc.

This is absolutely the case on Commodores, I always have them in "3" unless at higher speeds. They hang onto 4th at low speeds (ie. 55-60 kmh) and return poor fuel economy.
Do you auto people drive in "D" all the time or "3" around town and "D" at speed?
(May start another thread)
Hi Justinc.
When this problem appears, it doesn't appear to make any difference whether in sport mode or not. It just hangs onto 3rd forever.
When driving yesterday with a trailer behind, even 2nd was hanging on way too long (close to 4000rpm), even with very light throttle.
I think it might be time to see a tranny specialist before bigger problems arise.
I'm in Perth, so I think Jordan Rovertech or Discovery Auto are about all there is to chose from.

yes, but under a LIGHT throttle, IE coasting or on the flat, it'll slot into lock up to help fuel economy. As Smokybear says, as soon as you need it, it'll downshift smoothly and accelerate in a lower gear. I like the shift pattern in these electronic boxes, I wish the earlier cable downshift ones did this!!
