Second hand steering box once over

My steering box is stuffed. If you grab the input shaft and rotate it there's about 6 splines freeplay eyeballing the splines to a mark on the case. As you can imagine, it handles atrotiously.

I have a second hand one that only moves one spline before shifting the drop arm, but the hoses are open to atmosphere (I don't know for how long)

I'd like to strip and inspect the box, clean it, put a new seal kit in it while I'm there.

    Any tips or tricks?

If the chrome is chipped on the worm throw it away, otherwise bearings and seals. The correct pre-load is the most inportant thing,to loose and it will wobble over the road,to tight and the box will lunch itself. Pat

    OK OK you have tried.
Just make sure the second steering box is a roller lower bearing one.
It would be a retrograde step to go back to a bush box.
The change came in mid 1991 so check if it is before or after. You can have the earlier one's cases machined to take a roller bearing.
The advantages are , less friction, and the roller seems to last MUCH longer without leaking from the shaft.

Popped the top, pulled out the worm and the main shaft an it all seems pretty good. Not much oil in it though.

With the bleed nipple in the top cap, I'm guessing that they are meant to be full.

    So far so good.

Any one got ant good sources for seals and bearings for this box?
