a, shot steering damper
b, yep slop in the ujs in the shaft will play merry hell
c, worn splines on the pitman arm where its bolted to the bottom of the steering box
and prey like hell its not
d, cracked shaft in the steering box.
I have a D110 1999 (last of the 300Tdi) which has developed a nasty kick in the steering of the last 20,000km or so. On freeway-type surfaces at 110km/h all is well, but on rutted or corrugated back roads the steering wheel feels like I'm trying to hold on to a bag full of wallabies - it's driving me crazy.
So far, all front-end suspension, shocks, tie-rod-ends, pitman arm, wheel balance, wheel alignment has been checked or replaced. Today, a mate discovered some slop in the uni-joint in the steering column above the rag/doughnut arrangement.
Is this likely to be the cause? It kind of makes sense that it could be, but so did all of the other things that were part of the process of elimination to date.
Regards
Scott

Thanks for the reply,
The steering damper's been done too, sorry forgot to mention that.
Yep, I'm prayin' like hell right now! PS does make awful groaning noises at low-speed sometimes (i.e parking) but I assumed that was the pump and not the box. Praying.......
Not sure if it's the same as the Disco, apparently mine is the later and more expensive type (typical!). It has a couple of cast disc looking bits with a lump of what looks like conveyor belt rubber wedged between them, but the slop is actually in the UJ above that point before the shaft passes through a bearing shoe that's attached to the body/bulkhead.
