Thread: Cleaning gearbox fluid off the car ??

I assume you have a Discovery II and it's popped the oil cooler lines at the quick connect junction where it plugs into the radiator, just underneath the air cleaner box?

Can I ask you why the hose popped? Was it because there was some work done on the radiator recently and so the hoses were disconnected?

Are the replacement hoses any better in design compared to your old ones?

Some good quality car wash detergent should do it and plenty off it, conventional degreaser should do the under bonnet ok

For really hard to shift oil stains on paint I use prepsol.

For the underside if you leave it there, it will prevent it rusting. Just wipe off the excess.

The car is a 1990 rangie, which had the engine rebuilt before Xmas so yes the radiator has been out. There had been a slight leak at one of the connections which had been tightened. The hoses were old and in need of replacement at some point, the hose actually broke and it wasn't near a join which we undid to remove the radiator (I don't think anyway)

I am taking up Daves offer, as all the front suspension bushes are new and have no idea if gearbox fluid will do them damage.

As to whether there better I don't know, but my father was impressed with the way they were put together - maybe Dave will shed some further light on this.
