    Thumbs down 5TH Gear

Well as the title says, 5TH gear in the Disco is knackered at 160,000ks.

This morning coming to work as i slotted it into 5th it started to make a strange noise, i pulled over to check belts and wheel bearings, uni joints and for anything rubbing but couldn't find anything.

So off we go again and nothing in the first 4 gears, soon as it put it into 5th the noise started again.

    $2500 Approx to repair

Anyone know of a second hand or recoed R380 D2 box around

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

After bumping into your other half this morning and hearing of your conundrum, allow me to offer two bits of advice:
    1. After talking with your normal mechanical guru, have a chat with

Award Diffs, Unit 4, 5 South Street Rydlemere 9638-0822

as I saying to SHMBO, I've had some contact with them and find them to be approachable. They do the R380 rebuilds for a number of LR outlets.

    Have a look here Using a V8 R380 in a Tdi

and you'll see that it may only be a damaged gear on the end that needs replacing - not a full rebuild.

    2. Provided that the input shaft is the same on the TDi and TD5, you could borrow my old one whilst yours is out being rebuilt. ( Although you'd have to put up with a worn 2nd syncro )

Baz you have had your fair share ( poor begger ) of little problems of late. Did you get to the bottom of the over heating issues from the other day?

Hope everything settles down for you.

Thanks mate i will give them a call and see what they say and thanks for the offer, but apparently there's a bit of difference between the D1 & D2 R380s

Thanks mate, no i haven't, it's been over shadowed by the gearbox, i will speak to my mechanic about it as he has checked for a cracked before and found all was OK.

After ringing around most of the wreckers today, $2500 including the clutch is cheap compared to an already recoed one exchange, cheapest so far is AMV in Vic at $3300 + postage

We'll see what Award Diffs say.

A mate of mine got his R380 rebuilt for $2200 plus fitting at Rumbles at Dungog two weeks ago.Just as an extra I have not touched mine in 10 years and run ATF,most of the ones they rebuild run oil.Just a thought. Pat

Try British Off Road - 07 5445 1094 - they usually have exchange units in stock at reasonable prices

    Hi Redback,

Some guy in my club in Melbourne (LROCV) is selling a R380 out of a Series 2 Disco, 40K's on it, $1500. Bound to be in better nick than yours and then you've got your whole old gearbox to rebuild etc.

    Cheers

    Redback,

Recently replaced 5th in a 130, can be done in the vehicle. TF case off, extension hsg off and there it all is. We replaced both gears, and the rear brgs etc and it is an easy job.
