Thread: Which steering box is best?

That is a very good price Pat303. Was the box new or second hand.
The one i have ordered is low mileage second hand. Apparently good used ones that are left alone last longer than a reconditioned one.

After working on most boxes I think they are all pretty shyte to be honest, the later ones are just slightly less ****ty!

The drop arm is the cause for most problems and the bending motion induced onto the shaft causes seal and bearing failure. The most common cure that works is to replace 1 cup full (how scientific!) of steering fluid with a cup of brake fluid. Its best if you do this on a power steering box that is in good condition with good seals and bearings. It wont do anything for a box thats past it. The brake fluid causes the seal to expand a keep a tighter seal on the shaft. It has worked for me for many thousands of miles and no further box failures happend to me or others who done this.

Shouldnt I be writing this into my book of how to reduce the amount of leaks under your landrover?
