    nope, it's a 70w-80, approximately 10 cSt @ 100*C or thereabouts. (roughly eqivalent to a 10W-30 engine oil)Most ATF's are around 7-7.5 cSt @ 100*C, Syntrans is close to 12cSt @ 100*

Hang on, here's Red90's excellent manual gearbox oil site Low Viscosity Manual Transmission Lubricants

I've had an output bearing fail at about 70,000Km and parts were replaced under warranty, car was over 3 years old. Symptoms were slight noise in 5th gear under accelleration. We drove back from Brisbane and it did not get any worse. I've always had the (unproven) suspicion that the dealer put inferior oil in the box causing it to fail.

The gearbox oil t/stat starts to open at 87*, or at least the one I bought does. ('97-'98 300Tdi's don't have the oil cooler, I suspect LR thought that MTF 94 would be sufficient in high temps compared to an ATF....)
    What gbox temp sensor?
The auto D2s have a temp switch in the cooler and the V8s have a temp switch in the transfer case (and my TD5 now does too) but I don't know of a temp switch for the manual gbox.

Yes Scott good news there wasn't anything major

When we did the Simpson in 2005, we had the transmission temp light come on in the desert, a combination of slow going and clay build up under the car i think was the cause of this, it had rained when we were there so all of the clay pans were mud, which made for some interesting driving with the camper on.

I have only ever put MTF94 or an equivelent oil in the box and it has always been changed at intervals from 7,000ks to 15,000ks.

We do alot of towing, well all the time really and it does get a hard time when we play too

I was told the 130 has a stronger transfercase, is this true, the reason i ask is, the gearbox guy recommended going for the Defender transfer case rather than 4.11s reduction gears in the Disco, he reckons it will reduce the low range ratio and improve the high range torque giving me better ratios with the 32s or 33s.

Mine is a manual, i've put in bold what happened in the Simpson Desert.

    So yes they have

The price is about the same between the two mods of around $1100.
Defender TC is differnt in HIGH only....

Maybe yours has also been fitted with a transfer case temp switch.

Either that or its like the time my RRC had its auto-xmsn hight temp light turned on - whilst driving up a river the water and dirt combined to create a circuit for the non-existant oil cooler high temp switch wires.

Check if there's a temp switch on the left side of the TC, or just some wires tucked up on top.

    From the owners manual

    Transmission oil temperature
    (if fitted)
illuminates as a bulb checkwhen the starter switch is turned to position II and intinguishes after 3 seconds.

It's the top right side of the instrument panel below the water in the fuel filter warning light next selt belt light.

My D2 is the SE 01 model or base model

Some models with LT77 and R380, have temp indicator in the housing on the LH side of the gearbox. Some have an oil cooler (which has a thermatic valve in the housing). Some just have the blank housing.

I fitted the oil cooler to the R380 in my rangie.
