Question Any thoughts on a TD5 temp gauge UNDER reading....

    Evenin Guys,

Was out at the weekend on the LROC training course and after having played on the rock steps, waded through the wader and played on the beach, at the end of the 2nd day, my temp gauge decided that its steady middle position was not for it and now only reads 1/4.....

I ave checked fluid levels, and it has come back up to the normal middle on occassion after braking / cornering ....

Any ideas - I will check the temp sensor connection tonight.....

Have a look at your fuel temp sensor, sometimes that can do what you have described, we had this happen to us.

    Could be a couple of things;

Your viscous fan may be buggered and turning all the time,

I also had a poor clamp on my line from radiator is not leaking fluid but not holding pressure. The reduction in pressure reduces temperature like the old thing of undoing he cap 1 click when having issues.

    Cheers

assuming it is a real indication of lower coolant temperature, IMHE & FWIW this has usually been caused by a faulty thermostat staying open

Sounds pretty normal! The thermostat remains closed for about that long, depending on conditions to bring the engine up to correct op. temp. which is pretty high, about 85c I think. Usually what coincides with this is if you have an auto box,it won`t shift into 4th gear.until this temp is reached. That`s designed in as well.
But it won`t engage under 80K.anyway!

get the cooling system temp checked at the top hose while its as hot as it can get under normal circumstances. IF thats low then you need to look further if thats ok then its a dying sender or gauge.

    Guys,

Thanks for the replies, but my money is on Blknight's analysis, as the engine is "hot" and not cold when the gauge moves. The gauge also doesn't move gradually, it tends to flick from the middle (normal) position down to 1/4 of the gauge (cold) and some times back again. This would have me believe that it is the sender unit or some earthing or something.
Will hopefully have time 2-nite to look at it.

If it flicks then my money is on the instrument cluster having a bad connection somewhere - perhaps the connectors or the gauge itself. The gauge moves slowly under programmed control of the instruments ecu and it takes quite some time to react to increasing or decreasing temp signal from the engine ecu. A loose connection or faulty sender wont cause a quick reaction of the needle.

    Hi Auke
Do you have a RAVE CD manual???
    If not grab one.
Pretty sure Ive seen a "low temp gauge" symptoms listing on the disc.Im not tech savy enough to find it and post here!!!! Perhaps a techno dude can find the info and post!!!
