shocks for ACE-equipped Disco are different...

Hi - contrary to feedback I've received before, it seems that shocks for ACE-equipped vehicles are valved differently to those for vehicles without ACE - e.g. apparently using standard Bilsteins will be a bit harsh on ACE-equipped vehicles and both Graeme Cooper and Rovacraft reckon they need to be revalved for ACE at a cost of about $200/pair. Rovacraft reckon they've got an aftermarket shock that is ready to go for ACE at a cost of about $95 each - don't s'pose anyone knows what brand these might be?

Coils vs SLS yes there'll be a difference.

ACE is just a sway bar at the end of the day, shouldn't be any need for any difference.

The only difference that I can think of between ACE and non ACE might be slightly different valving at low-mid shock speeds because of ACE's increased roll stiffness of centre. Personally I wouldn't have worried, but then again, each to their own.
    Cheers

Surely GC and Rovacraft might have some idea about what they're talking about?

Personally I would think you could get away with softer suspension all round (coils and shocks) with ACE as you're less concerned about the need to control body roll on road...

    You have a point Feraldisco.
Ive gone from worn out 200000km oem to a EFS +2"
The worn out stuff wicked on the road, soft as,the ACE deals with it.
But take it off road, the worn out crap is BAD news.
Im happy with the EFS setup, who wouldnt when a D2 with 235/85 MTRs and a 2" lift handles better than a dunnydoore or falcoon around a roundabout.
My ride is heaps harsher than standard, but not to worried about that.Once its fully loaded for a trip rides like a limo!!!!

LR had different rear shocks on early D2s for ACE/non-ACE, SLS/coils, but from my03 onwards they all use the same one.

I wouldnt doubt they have more than an idea as to what they are talking about
    But
In the case of certain valving for a D2 with ACE I wouldnt beleive that this be apparent simply because
ACE is activated by sensors reading load and actuating the hydraulics to compensate body roll
If rebound or damping affected this situation it would be minimal as it doesnt take the ACE long to react and correct the body roll apparent when cornering
So for a certain valved shock to make anymore compensation would again be minimal (Definately not worth the extra money)
Some say Bilstein are in need of revalving simply because they are set to rigid for a disco (In some peoples opinions)
In that case save the extra you would pay to have someone do the job and buy a set of Tough Dog adjustables
They are just as good and you can adjust them yourself
It doesnt take an Oxford schollar to do this simply drive through the same corner until you have the right feel in setup for you and that will do

    Bzzztttt...

Its actually more Slunnies line of post than "Codswallop"

TD Adjustables.. Yeah, a great boofy POS foam cell shock.... What a piece of crap they are.

Obviously one needs a better understanding of suspension dynamics

I run Tough Dogs (Coils and shocks) in my D2 and they are fine
And as far as knowing dynamics of suspension I wouldnt have been employed as the wheel aligner with Goodyear if I didnt
(Tuned many drift and race cars) which have more handling capabilities in there left rear than any LandRover ever would
Ive had Kings (to soft)and Lovells(to stiff (if your not happy with them they dont replace them) (Both sets of springs didnt compensate for the lean)in mine as well and they are Crap compared to TDs (Tough Dogs have given me a very capable on and off road car)
If you want to talk about mid to low speed cornering in a vehicle we arent talking race cars here its a 4x4 and your not going to notice the difference as it wont get to the point were you need to run stuts across the front or rear towers for added stiffness or need in car bias controlled swaybars to compensate understeer or oversteer for that matter
I have a good enough understanding of suspension to have set up my WRX for track work at Waneroo Race track and beat cars with more grunt but a bad setup so dont go telling me I dont know what Im talking about when it comes to suspension
The question that was first asked is do I need to have a revalved set of shocks for a D2 that has ACE and the answer is NO you dont its a pile of Codswallop as there are heaps of us that dont have especially valved shocks that run D2s with Lifted and standard height Discos
So get back in ya box and close the lid
