    td5 disco2 engine harshness

are the td5's a "smooth" engine? mine seems a bit coarse and has a couple of rev ranges where it makes the cabin drone/resonate a noticable amount. the car is 2" lifted, and i understand that there can be driveline vibrations from that, but this does seem to be engine speed and load related. mainly its 2200-2400 and 2600-3000rpms. in all gears, although less so in 3rd and 4th.

Yeah the Td5 has never been a smooth engine. It has a fair bit of clatter...I think it may have something do do with its 5 cylinder format.

Mine is the same...harsh in 1st and 2nd and smoother in 3rd and 4th. Dont know why...perhaps it has something to be with the peak power torque range which is about 2000rpm? Usually in 3rd and 4th the engine is right on the sweet spot.

The engine can rev out to at least 4000-4500 rpm. If you have a manual you might find shifting earlier might help. Shift at 2000rpm.

The TD5 is a smooth 5 pot - shouldnt give any excess vibrations through any rev range - granted its not silky smooth like the TDV6 or TDV8 but it is a nice lump.

I would be taking off the props and checking for UJ and/or spline wear (if you separate the spline, make sure it goes back together in EXACTLY the same position).

If its lifted its also worth checking your front drive train bushes - Radius arm front and rears particularly. The fronts will probably be OK, rears have a habit of failing on lifted vehicles (without corrected front arms) due to constant compression loading on the bottom side of the bush.

The fact that its less noticeable under hard acceleration sounds about right - it'll still be there, just masked out by the other rapidly occurring activity..

Has it just started doing it or is the vehicle new to you?
    Regards,
    Jon

the vehicle is new to me. it isnt anything bad, just noticable and i thought i'd ask. i and a non-landrover mechanic have been "under" the car and all seems well in the suspension department. this is backed up, by feeling very tight still to drive. the front driveshaft looks new, and all the bushes seem fairly newish too- no wear, lightness of colour, or small cracks appearing yet.

Try searching the forum for oil in the wiring harness, and throttle position potentiometer/sensor

Check the Td5 common thread here-
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/common-thr...5-engines.html

    Here for throttle position sensor-

Pretty soon the guys who know about Td5s will turn up if they're not all on the way to Cooma.

    Cheers

FYI, I test drove about 6 D2's when searching to update from my D1 TDi. I could not tolerate the vibration these TD5 autos had when taking off and at certain revs. I almost gave up until I found the one I have now. It was smooth as silk in comparison to the othe ones I test drove.

However at 89,000 kms a damn vibration creeped in. The cabin sounded like I had a sports exhaust at certain revs and there was a feint clicking sound from the back of the engine. It really felt like a broken engine mount causing the engine to rest on the body or chassis.

To cut a long story short, it was the torque converter. Two of the three mount bolts were broken and the third was about to fail. This caused the vibration as the torque converter was out-of-balance. It was replaced and the vehicle is back to silky smooth.

There was something not right with the vehicles I test drove and this type of failure may have been developing in them. Mine was a major failure, hopefully this is not the case for you.

Mine's a manual and it has an engine harshness that starts just at 2400/2500 and stays there to some degree to at least 3500. It causes a cabin drone from j100kph and is quite bad up to about 112kph although its not there when on overrun down a hill. I'm looking forward to the day I update to a TDV6 as the drone drives me crackers (or perhaps I'm crackers anyway) and makes my head numb after a day on the freeway.
