Not normal. Are you sure it was the auto and not the diffs or transfer?
Hi fello landrover enthusiasts
We have a 2004 auto Td5 and have found a couple of times that the gearbox makes a funny noise, its like it "growls" at you. On the weekend we went out for a drive and about half-way up Mt Glorious (which is a pretty steep climb that goes for a number of kms) the gearbox started to "growl". Is it just something that happens when the gearbox is worked hard? The engine temperature didnt change nor did any warning lights come on? Is this normal?
Any information you can pass on would be greatly appreciated
Jeff

manual or auto....
the manuals will growl a little if they are starting to wear or have had the wrong oil in them for a prolonged period. Lots of life left in them but they are unnerving to listen to.

Im not 100% sure about what it was. The auto was just the first thing that came to my head so i thought i would see if anyone else had herd the same noise. It doesnt happen often at all but do u think it is something i should get checked out straight away?
Its an automatic and has only done 77,000km
I would, especially if you are not sure what it is. It's probably worth seeing what comes out in the transfer case oil also. Sometimes little problems become big ones and I'm a believer in preventative work.
My rear diff growls and I can what lube is in it and how hot it is by the noise. I think the diff wasn't setup properly which is what causese the noise (I run different diff gears to standard), but that type of thing doesn't normally just start to happen for no reason.

I know this could sound condersending and it's not ment too, but could it be the traction control that you can hear, i think you said it only happens sometimes, the sound the modulator makes when the traction control goes on makes a type of growl.
