show us your 110 'extra' storage??

Now I'm not talking about in-side the normal surrounds of the car, nor on top of the car, I'm talking about finding extra storage in un-used places. For example I've got one of those 40ltr water tanks in the rear right wing, and I've seen those 45ltr aux fuel tanks that will sit inside the rear left wing (pricey - has anyone fabricated these?? any dimensons??).

So what about other spots which may not be utilized, perhaps under the car, or in the engine bay, on the roo bar or strapped to the rear crossmember?? There must be a few inovative space solutions for 110's. Maybe a location for a 3rd battery.

I was thinking a lockable compartment under the drivers seat bolted to the chasis for tools and ropes, gardening tools on the bonnet, perhaps small compartments in behind the guards..

any ideas welcome and yes I like tetris when packing.

theres some spaces up under the wings behind the lights and infront of and behind the mud guards. these are generally good for storage tanks for water air and the like

if you dont have the winch on the bar theres some space between the rails in side the bar

theres a little bit of space which might be alright for small lock boxes containing oil bottles behind the front whees in front of the support memeber where the mud guards boltup

theres the space under the body work between the front and rear outriggers which is good for fuel/water tanks or even a drop down hinge box to keep stuff in that you dont need to get to when bogged.

the side steps make good holders for tent pole or spiral wound ropes/drag chains/tree trunk protectors.

depending on what doors you have you can remove the trim and/or install panels that make for good document holders or cutting board holders.

there is a space thats behind the gearbox and infront of the rear diff that should be a good space for a 3rd battery, a sealed invertor or a 12 compressor providing that the compressor doesnt mind dirt and the intake is plumbed to clean air.

theres a small area in front of and behind the rear wheels that is about the same deal as the fronts but you can side cut the panels and turn them into lockers or aux fuel/water tanks. Ive found that its hard to mount up air tanks there due to routing of the line but its not impossable..

inside you can make up a bed in the long wheel bases that dont have cargo barriers that is held up by 4 ropes to the roof and then when you lower it down you can slide it off or sleep on it ontop of the stuff thats inside. IT also does well as sound insulation and heat insulation inside the vehicle.

theres also a small area that is above the aframe its fairly flat and I havent worked out what to put there yet but I suspect that a flat tank might just go in there.

    Dave,

thats what I'm talking about. some great ideas for storage there mate, cheers. Its a shame the spaces under the driver/passenger seats are taken up as they are good sized areas. Good point about undercar storage and getting bogged - it would suck having to get the snatch strap out up to your axles in mud. The tool box on the roo bar is a great idea as well, and it could be removable.

My sisters county has a water tank that is triangular in crossection under the drivers side sill. Holds about 40Ls and is filled through a cap in the drivers floor. The triangle is so it goes from the bottom of the door sill to bottom of the chassis.

I made some floor storage for under the rear seats of the 130. I've sold it now so don't have any decent pictures though.

I've seen storage boxes recessed into the front guards with the lids flush with the top of the guard. This was on a SIII, but do-able in a Defender.

Cargo Barrier shelves can store things up high.

The rear floor on a wagon, between the raised seat area and the back of the front seat box can be boxed in with a false floor, if your rear seat passangers are only little people.

Military LRPVs (Long Range Patrol Vehicle) have the jerry cans mounted side by side, so they can fir two either side of the tail gate. At least the Norforce ones do.

Store all your music on a HDD and you can save all the CD storage space.

You can raise the centre cubby a couple of inches and slide maps etc under there.

You can put pockets on the back of the centre cubby, or on the sides (besides the seats) for maps, books etc.

Hard Tops can be fitted with recessed tool boxes where the rear door on a wagon goes - like the military ones, but now available commercially - I saw the advert in LRO, can't remember who makes them.

Right angle 'runners' under the roof rack floor can provide a slide in position for a table.

I got my MIL to make rear seat covers with pockets with velcro tabs for the back seats - good storage for overalls, snatch strap, rain coat etc.

Tubular sections of side steps or bull bars can be used as air reservoirs.

Spare wheel carriers can also accomodate pioneer tools and lights. Gets the tools out of the vehicle and allows for easy access.

I have a TD5 Defender and my favourite unused space is inside the RHS front wing (just unscrew the black plastic cover). It is high and dry and not too hot. I have all the extra electrical stuff there such as relays and the GPS aerial.

Under front wings put the winch control box. Stops the box getting full of water and place a remote plug in the plastic screw off top on RHS for easy acess in the mud.

Under driver seat in TDi put aircompressor, relays, airtank and fusebox.

False floor in back seat allows for low storage of fold up tables, highlift jack etc.

Cargo net strung infont of cargo barrier cable tied to barrier and grab handles allows pillows and other solf items to be out of the way and reduces chances of bedding getting wet. (ask slunnie about croc creek Cape York!)

Rhino rack commercial shovel holder allows for less weith and easy access when bolted to landrover/arb style racks.

small rear shelf over water tank alongside rear of cargo barrier allows snatch straps, rattle gun etc to be stored without taking excess space.

    Best storage:

Mount engel water tank alongside cargo barrier with the above shelf. Plump in a pump and hose out the door and you always have easily accessible water.

What about cutting through the rear footwell space and putting compartments under the floor? I saw a car on Top Gear that had storage like that. It might have been a Berlingo.
