Gearboxes?

Can anyone tell me a quick way to tell the differences between a LT85 and a LT77 when fitted in the car?

Also, I know the bellhousings between TDi's and V8's are different, but assuming the same engine type, is there much difference between the bellhousings of the 3 main gearbox types - i.e. LT85, LT77 and R380?

The LT85 (Santana) is a boxy square affair - whilst the LT77 is skinnier and rounder. Obviously the bolt pattern of the Santana box is different to the 77 or 380 box, but I think there are only small differences between the diesel bell housings and maybe no difference in the v8 bell housings.

Assuming the gearbox is in a car, isn't reverse in a different place , which should also be on the knob?
LT77 on LH next to first and LT 85 on RH next to fourth , or vice versa.
come on you manual mavens.

LT77 and LT 85 have the same reverse position, but the LT85(Santana) is an all alloy case. There are also lightweight and heavy duty versions, one is a divided case (Split down the middle like a subaru box) and one has a one piece main housing.

...and both have an unpleasantly close shifter gate set up

If only the Santana had R380 shift quality
