    TD5 130 oil filter housing

    HI all, despite being careful I have stripped the thread on the rotary oil filter housing for the bolt nearest the engine. There is very little room to use a through bolt as reaching the end of the bolt to apply the nut is close to impossible. Is it possible to re-thread the housing to take the next size up in bolts?If so, what sizes are available?Thanks in advance, 130man.PS would a self tapping screw be a reasonable solution to this problem?

    You should be able to find an engineering firm or mechanic that can fit a Helicoil to the hole. This is basically a coil of metal, similar in appearnace to a spring. The inside being a match for the bolt thread. The hole with the stripped thread is tapped out to suit the outside of the coil. They come in all different sizes but the one you need is for 6mm metric thread. Motorcycle mechanics may also be able to help you ith this.
    If you are competent, you can also buy the kits to enable you to DIY it. These are normally available from nut and bolt/fastener suppliers.

    Hi Foz, thanks for the reply. I shall call in at a bolt specialist tomorrow and see what is available. The hole in question is below the exhaust manifold but is accessable, with some form of extension bar, to a tap so it may be do-able in situ.Cheers, 130man.

    The actual problem is that the original LR bolts are not long enough and they only 'grab' about 4mm of the alloy housing.

    The tap need to go right through and have longer bolts. You also only need to hand tighten the bolts too.

    But don't fear..every Td5 owner has most likely stripped atleast one thread by now
