Well mate if u drove it round for a week or 2 like that your verry blody lucky the shaft is supose to go right through from one side to the other of the carrier and is held in place with 2 circlips this shaft is what holds the side gears in place and it is the weakest link in the rover diff be it 24 or 10 spline
Also on closer inspection the side gear that hasent got the pin sticking through looks to be the one that was making the noise your verry lucky it didnt damage more like the CW&P or ventlate the diff housing which i have done a few times

No more problems front or rear now, just gonna have to watch the axles and cv"s
