No special spanner required on a V8, just a big spanner or shifter - suppose the same would apply to a Td5. That's all I use.

The fan undoes in the same direction that the fan rotates (also applies to V-belt systems - the Rover V8 V-belt driven fans rotate in the opposite direction to serpentine belt driven fans).
