    smokey td5

i wrote how ive noticed my td5 d2 is running rough and slow when cold+putting out smoke under medium/high throttle(hot or cold). which i can only tell when there is a car behind me at night.

well today i started her up(cold) and it put out alot of white/blue smoke for about 20-30seconds at anything above idle(approx 800-1250rpm). this has me worried...

coolant level is ok, its lost probably 1inch over 3000kms. seems to lose it within the first 100kms of topping up to the marker.

oil level is full(perhaps even fuller than i remember after servicing???!!!) but i cant see any discolouration or wierd(to me) smells to it.

i am at the bottom of my fueltank however.(tank level doesnt affect the cold problems or smoke when accellerating).

any tips on what i should look for please.

its getting taken to the dealer next week, but if i cant tell them whats wrong they'll either do nothing, or else something for a quick/short term fix, till my warranty expires.
    thanks.

Hi Simon, I'm no expert but the first thing to check would be the plug into the ECU for oil contamination as this can cause all sorts of minor difficulties. The "extra " oil in the sump may also be a leaking injector seal which can progressively add diesel to the sump, thereby diluting the lubrication oil.Others will have more specific advice but you may have to wait until after the long weekend.Search the threads a bit and you may find some tips.Cheers, 130man.

thanks for the reply. yeah ive been searching all thru here(damn 30sec intervals!!!) and google. the oil level isnt too high, i just checked it hot rather than warm/cool. i just rechecked it and its where i thought it should be.(phew) i dont know how to check whether there is diesel in it, besides obvious smell and colour. to me it all seems as it should. has a slight smell of a diesel truck/car exhaust, but i'm assuming thats because its a diesel! still feels oily and not gritty or runny. i checked the impellor(right term?) of the turbo at the intake end, and it has a bit of side play. enough that if i grab the bit of rod thats there i can feel about 1mm of side movement. spins freely/smoothly though.

if the oil level is rising stop driving. get the injectors pulled and new seals inserted and an oil change and that solves that.

check your intercooler hoses for colapsing while the engine is running AFTER you have established that the engine isnt "making" oil. have the SWMBO stomp on the noisey pedal from idle and see what happens if they change shape, change em out for silicone ones and then you can forget about em.
