    300Tdi Alternator

    I was returning home this afternoon from the Mt Terrible Hut in the High Country, only about 130k from home when suddenly the tacho died and the battery light on the dash came on.
    Pulled over, checked to see that I hadn't thrown the serpentine belt. Using a test light, checked for any output,,,,nil, zip, nothing,,,,only a loud rattling sound coming from the alternator.

    Has it died a quick death ?
    Can it be rebuilt ?
    What price am I looking at for a new and or 2nd hand alternator ?

    Sorry peoples, I am only a carpenter, not an auto sparky..

    disco 100 amp alternator = about $400 in my experience

    i got a denso version of the MM unit for that sort of money a couple of years ago.

    there are other options that require varying degrees of ginning around. i had no time to take one of those routes...

    Hi Gav;

    Found this , magnetti Marelli Rebuild by our very own Langy,

    PIcs of a Tdi alternator rebuild

    They are relatively easy to rebuilt , I rebuilt mine that had a noisy bearing , or you can take it off and take it to an Auto Electrician to rebuild it for you and then put it back on , as for cost not really sure how much ?

    If you can rest the Landy remove the alternator and take it to a good auto sparky.
    Im sure your local AULRO mates will guide you in the right direction.
    Loads cheaper do get rebuilt if you present the unit to them rather than them removing refitting,they prefer not too.
    I have a mate who is an auto eleccy,all my starter motor alternator issues get sorted this way.Even if he is busy,its a quick fix when its already out of the vehicle.They have all the gear to test it off vehicle so the vehicle isnt required.
