soft chirping noise in d2 td5

ive noticed this for the last couple of weeks at around 20kph-50kph. i'm pretty sure its road-speed related, rather than engine-speed. my feeling is that its driveline related. its a definate chirping sound, not swishing(like brakes) or regular rubbing/grinding noise(like bearings). but it does sound like its revolution related. it's a regular beat, matched to what i belive is wheel rotation.(ie- chirp, chirp, chirp gets faster the faster the speedo says) u cant hear it above 50km/h, but thats probably just because other noise overpowers it.

my first thought was DC joint, but there is no play that i can find. perhaps the tiniest amount (less than 1mm of actual movement) up and down.

does anyone know what it could be?

i did do a small door-sill height water crossing a few weeks ago.

    thanks.

I'd put money on it being the front DC Joint, you shouldn't have any play on the joint itself although you may have a small amount of play on the front output transfer case bearing.
Mine did exactly as you are describing and got progressively worse untill i found the problem.
Get your front DC joint professionally checked if you're unsure of its condition yourself. If it fails at any speed the results would be rather harsh on your wallet
Think smashed gearbox and possible major accident........

Would definitely check the uni joint, but would also check the exhaust manifold. I had a very similar chirping sound on mine and took a while to work out that the studs had sheared and it was the vibration of the gasket between the block and the manifold. It only happened between certain rpms as that was what was needed to pass enough exhaust gas pass the gasket to vibrate it.

    Cheers

It's actually quite easy to do yourself if you have a socket set and a few ring/open ended spanners

If you do do it yourself just remember to mark the relationship of the shaft to the bits it joins to (piece of chalk is good) this just makes sure you put it back the same way round and the correct hole to the correct bolt etc., - sure you know what I mean

............and as said above - get greaseable ones

    DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF!!!!!
    Unless you are a mechanic!!!
I got mine done by an "old fella" mechanic in Albany on the way home from a holiday trip.It had him totally stuffed. The "eyeball" joint in the middle is the problem.I actually nutted it out for the mechanic,he actually was dumbfounded,we put it down to,me looking outside the picture and him never doing an eyeball joint before. He told me in 45 years of spanner chucking never has a customer been able to show him how to go around a job.
DONT GO LANDROVER!!! ITS A NON SERVICE ITEM,$1500-$2000 FIX
Park it up mark (so you refit the same position)then drop the front shaft and take it to a local driveshaft expert.
    GOODLUCK

    thanks again.

mcdisco, my first thought was the manifold, but no bolts have snapped, and the sound is there when coasting in idle. i'm pretty anal with any squeaks and rattles on any part of the car.
