sounds like the timing may be off by a tooth or two.

it has 180,000 kms, pump untouched as far as i know, it has a snorkle....it blows a bit of black smoke on start up then if you rev it from idle it blows a bit of white/blue smoke....i think its less when warm....
(only owned it for a couple of days)
    Thanks

White smoke indicates unburnt fuel - usual after cold start.

Black smoke indicate incomplete combustion - not enough air to burn the injected fuel.

Blue smoke indicates burning oil - eg. worn rings or valve guides/seals.

    ditto what John typed.

Where do you get your fuel ?
Poor quality fuel (or dodgy injectors) can also do this on starting.
I only buy fuel from known sources or major brand servo's that appear to have a large turnover.

Buggered turbo seals do that too.

As do glased bores from too much idling around, a good long workout may do some good, just don't rev the nuts off it .
An oil change may help too..............

White smoke IMHO means water (condensation???). Check for coolant leaks, oil in coolant increased coolant pressure may indicate head gasket failure.

Cheers and good luck with the beast!
