    alternator woes please help

I own a 1999 130 td5 and am having battery charging problems. I am getting a voltage reading of 13.5 to 14.5 at the alternator and starter motor bridge but only 12.25 at the positive terminal of the battery. The other interesting thing is that the battery charge light on the dash goes out after startup. Any help would be appreciated as I am starting to get confused.

Is battery voltage lower than when the engine is running e.g. are you getting feed at the battery at all?

Is there a fuseable link between the alternator and the battery, if so check it's not blown?

Or there may be a fuse on the alt feed, not comon but I have seen it on some euro cars?

I dont know enough about the TD5 systems but it is pretty obvious that if you have 14v at the alt and not at the battery then there is alternator feed cable issue.

Find a schematic and have a look to see what could be broken or blown.

On older cars if there is corrosion all over the terminals it can eat away at the feed wire so the battery doesnt get voltage.

I have the schematic of the charging circuit and there are no fuses between the alternator and the battery. The only other thing I have noticed is the alternator does not seem to load up the engine when I put my spotlights on. It aslo appears that the when the engine first starts up the charge out of the alternator is 14 to 15 volts and after a while drops to about 13. Do you think the voltage regulator is stuffed?

Check your Battery, Engine and Chassis earths, make sure they are servicable, Regards Frank.

some new batteries also come with a goop on the terminals that is sort of insulative if you havent cleaned this off you will have a high resistance link.

Sounds like the problem I had.

Turned out to be a lousy connection on the Alternator + output.
The connection was a bit loose and covered in oxide prob. giving a high resistance. The charge light went out and it seemed to be getting charge to the battery, but I suspect precious little current.

That is all normal behaviour, the Alt will try to replace any power used by the lights and in most cases the lights will run straight off alt power rather than drain the battery.

What is your battery voltage at the battery when switched off....11v and your batt voltage when running......12.8v (I think you said) and 13.8v at the alternator.......It has to be between battery and alternator that you are loosing current, something drawing more than it should e.g. a dual battery system, lights, amplifier, inverter or just dodgy wiring.

You will need to be feeding the battery about 14v for it to hold 12v comfortably and have enough cca's to start the diesel engine in winter so having under 13 at the battery wont be sufficient.

Now that you know what should be between the alt and the battery, go have a look and see what is connected that could be drawing current.

Any dirty terminal pos or neg will creat resistance which is your enemy so as said before, make sure all related terminals are totaly clean dry and coated with vas, electrolitic grease or battery spray and then if still no joy, start looking at the things that shouldnt be related.

It still could be a stuffed battery (if those voltages arnt correct as if there is more at the alt than the bat then there has to be loss in between), every winter I go through about 2 or 3 at the golf club, they dont like cold weather.
