    Discovery 300tdi engine mounts

    Hi All,
I have a vibration that is slowly getting worse. With the engine idling and at revs (vehicle stationary) there is a vibration through the chassis. I had a look at the engine mounts when I did the gearbox and they appeared okay but seemed to be very stiff. I could not flex them by hand. Is this normal? Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Dose the vibration get worse or gose away with foot on clutch?

Something to check: I've had this type of vibration on my 300Tdi, and on a v8. It was a damaged fan. If one blade departs it throws the rest of the engine off.

Thanks for your replies. I checked the fan and all is okay and the vibration is still there with the clutch in or out. The tensioner bushes are still quite firm with no play. My thinking is that the engine mounts have gone hard overtime and transmitting the engine vibration to the chassis. I checked the exhaust pipe for security and found nothing out of the ordinary, unless the rubber mounts on the system have harden. This vibration slowly appeared over the last 18 months. I really want to sort it out as it is annoying.

Probably not, although have someone rev the engine (don't go silly here) and watch if the belt is all over the place when it comes on/off power.

Fan's a good spot to check though (onya Langy!) as that's one of the main bits that will flog out and cause vibes. Wiggle it to see if it moves, ideally with the fan belt tension off it. Those tensioners sure do hold some pressure on the bearings.... While you're looking, and this is much rarer, the harmonic balancer on the end of the crankshaft can have issues too.

Failing that, check your driveline unis, output bearings on t-case and diffs...... And a real silly one, tyre balance. If you've been bush and tossed some balance weights that will introduce vibration.
