Defender td5 tranfercase!! EMPTY, this could be expencive!!

Just decided to look after my defender today, changed all the oils and due to the lack of service history,

did the diffs, engine no worrys moved on to the transfer case, and enough oil to only a small splash came out!! I have know idea how long it has been running on a small splash of oil. The hole car has only done 140000.

I have just filled the transfer case up, and i really hope not too much damage has been done. It looks like it is coming out of the rear seal behind the handbrake drum. I'm going to monitor the amount of oil coming out, to see if it is gushing or dripping. I have no idea of the leak rate.

Looked at the magnetic plug, no big chips, just magnetic fines.

Can you change this seal without removing the transfer case?

Has this happened to any one else? did it end badly?

    Have fun

    Mike

    unpanic....

the very little bit of oil will have been getting splashed around and sticking to the bits that need it as best it could.

it'll have some wear but since it hasnt already failed now that youve added oil its not just going to fail tomorrow.

the seal can be changed without dropping the tcase and takes about 2 hours to do from the time you pull out the spanners to the time your taking it for a test drive. Odds are tho that the sealing surface is damaged and it will leak again.

I bet if you keep putting good oil in it, stay on top of the level it'l llast oh 60k Km if you dont abuse it.

Hi Mike, if it makes you feel better a similar thing happened to my daughter's TD5 Defender. Three and a half years ago the car went in for a recall on the dual mass flywheel (was missed in the initial recall). The job wasn't done by a dealer due to the remote area. We visited her about 3 months later and I was concerned about the whine in the gearbox - turned out absolutely no oil in the transfer (suspect forgot to refill) I too thought this might be terminal, but after filling up - no more noise - still good (touch wood). Cheers, Erich.

Reminds me of a cousin with a brand new Austin (shows how long ago it was). 500 mile service; 1000 mile service ; 2000 mile service; 3000 mile service - then the gearbox failed while halfway across the state, so it went into another dealer. The inside of the box was not even oily - it had never had any oil in it! But it did over three thousand miles before failing, and the selling dealer ticked off the gearbox oil as checked four times in that period.

I have always run the newlon G70 teflon stuff in my gearboxes on the other cars, didn't bother with the defenda coz it runs trendy expencive synthetic oil. Im told that after a G70 treatment they can run dry!!! expencive experiment!!

I'm going to service the gear box tomorrow. Does any one know what size the in filler port is? looks like its a torx thought the mirror, could be misstaken going to look in daylight tomorrow.

    Thanks again guys

I had the same good luck with mine, We had fitted the Isuzu and ZF/LT230 in a few late nights leading up to a trip towing a van to Qld. We got to West Wyalong and the auto failed So we went East to Newcastle, and fitted another ZF at All4X4 spares,(Me and Bentseries working under a hoist...)and that is when we discovered 200ml of gearoil in the transfer!!!!

Then I remembered the other halfs comment about 'What's that strange whining, it gets worse when we are climbing hills...'

We must ALWAYS listen to our wives.

Filled again with oil, did another 15K and then I swapped it out for a LT95.
    Was still quiet.
    Good units these LT230's!

    just one tip...

dont keep your eye on the transfer case you either have to be a contorionist to do it or strapped under the vehicle which while achievable due to the ground clearance does get interesting when it comes time to fording.

Keep an ear out for it you'll pick up the thrumming/whining of a Tcase low on oil once you know what to listen for.

If you dont know what to listen for and have just filled it up, pay attention that "theres something wrong It doesnt sound right" feeling is a clue. work out what it is thats missing and when it comes back stop and fill up the oil.
