    D1 3.9 V8 Revving High at Idle

    Hello All,

My D1 has the 3.9 V8 and as of late when I slow down and take the right foot off the pedal the revs remain high. It does return to an idle speed after a short time but to me it seems to be sticking. Can I please have some ideas as to what might be the cause. Could it be electrical (ie computer linked) or is it more likely to be something mechanical in the throttle bodies sticking? Any ideas of what it could be or what to do to try and fix would be great.

    Thanking you all in advance.

    Vinnie

See if the revs return to normal when you play with the throttle manually under the bonnet. If it still revs high it could be a sticky stepper motor.

Give the stepper motor a good clean with some throttle body cleaner and squirt a bit of cleaner into the hole it came out of.

    See if that helps

Remove and clean your Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) and the hole it closes in to.
The thing sticking out of the back of your plenum chamber.

The main reason for hang up is the stepper motor as detailed, but another reason for this can be that the centrifugal advance is sticking at advanced. Take off the dizzy cap and see if the rotor will move easily backwards and forwards about 4-5 mm.
The fix is to place a few drops of oil under the rotor, but be very careful removing the rotor as if you pull hard it will break a clip on the dizzy shaft.
If it is the dizzy, it means that no one has lubricated it for a long time, so you may have to break the rotor to remove it. If so remove the little screw in the shaft and drop as much oil in as possible without making a mess and manually move it backwards and forwards until free. Use only a genuine rotor .
