    All of the things suggested can contribute to this problem, but in almost all cases severe wobble as described will stop if the swivel preload is right, and fixing everything else will not stop it if swivel preload is inadequate.

    In a vehicle with that mileage there is a good chance that there are a lot of contributors to the problem, but I would have started with wheel balance and then swivel preload. Most of the other contributors to the problem will show other symptoms as well (which may have appeared unnoticed as they start gradually) such as wandering steering (bushes, tie rod ends) or brake pad knock back (wheel bearings).

    Im sure your tyrepower guy know it but all land rover steel wheels need to be balanced using the wheel stud holes, not the centre hole.

    I would agree with panhard rod bushes,, my county had a extremely bad wobble recently too, i think i could probobly beat you for that worlds worst wobble title. After the last trip i took it on prior to fixing it i had to drive it home at at 40ish kph to keep it from shaking me right off the road, the weekend of 4wding had pushed it over the edge.

    It had slowly got worse over the last 6 months i changed a few things, whole new diff housing from a 96 disco with an arb locker, uprated axles and CVs, basically rebuilt the whole diff and set it up nice, then replaced the drag link and track rod with Heavy duty items, replaced all the tie rods and ball joint on the steering arm, after all that the wobble remained.

    We found there was a bit of side to side movement in on of the panhard rod bushes, hard to tell but it was actualy partial crushed in the centre(it was a poly bush) when we pulled it out i had another panhard rod with good bushes so i put that in and it was all good, drives almost as good as my commodore on road now, no more vague steering and death wobbles.

    try 235/75/15's on a datsun 1600,, 3 turns lock to lock,
    3 spoke leather(steel arms) 13" steering wheel,,
    The good part was it would return to centre brilliantly,,
    the bad part was a thumb broken in TWO places,,

    Had this a few times on a couple of land rovers. In the Uk it is called death wobble and if you have felt it you will agree it is name right as if you are doing 120K's and it starts to do it it feels like you are driving over the front axle which is about to fall off , and you feel like you are going to die

    But as said before it is a combination of a few things, Bushes in front hocky sticks and panard rod, and King pins being lose , also check the steering Damper

    Got it booked in with my local mechanic tomorrow. I printed out all the good oil and he was very appreciative of all the advice given here. So thanks guys. I'll let you know what it was when he has fixed it.

    My mate spent a small fortune on solving wobble issues in his Pootrol. Turned out to be the radius arms, so i did mine in the Rangie (amongst other things) and hasn't fixed it. His wobble was very bad - had to jump on the brakes and stop asap.

    But not quite as bad as another mate (Pootrol again - i think i need some new friends)... his (something) rod came off and he went straight off the side of the road (he was ok)... Now THATS wobble .

    It's called Patrol shimmy.Like Landcruiser lurch there isn't a fix,you just have to live with it. Pat

    There is heaps of ways to fix the Datto shimmy, but they have VERY fine tolerances on which they're happy with
