    350 Chev transplant

    Gday guys

I'm just about to transfer my 350 chev from my old 78 RRC to a 92. When I put the chev in the 78 I used an HEI dizzy. This meant cutting the bulkhead for clearance. I don't want to do this on the 92. Anyone know what ignition system will solve this problem?

    Cheers
    Graeme

I got around it in my RR by having a 40mm body lift. I assume you dont want to go down that path either?

    Hi Graeme,

I just chopped the plenum when doing a body swap onto a chassis with a 350 and kinda regret it now. Was in a bit of a hurry. Looks neat, but not ideal.

PhilipA advised at the time that Accel aftermarket distributors are physically smaller. Had a search but couldn't get dimensions. A speed shop would have these in stock for Chev. I think there would be more than one model.

You could also do something like this:

    Megajolt 3.9 EFI V8 RRC - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

and get rid of the distributor altogether. Would be cheap to get EDIS from the wreckers and I have an address for trigger wheels.

    cheers, DL

    Howdy Graeme.

The '92 has a different firewall shape to accomodate the Tdi engine, IE more room. Have you measured it to see if it would fit? However, I'm not sure how big these HEI dizzys are, I vaguely remember the one on Petes Defender HO, but can't equate it to a RRC

    Hows the work front going??

HEI dizzys are bigger than points AFAIK.

As your offering up the eng assy heat up the firewall and belt it with a hammer and big punch or straight ended bar, to match the profile of the dizzy. You can actualy get it to look quite neat. Then give it a hit with a decent can primer and paint after a wire brush and on the other side in the air vent plenum with some caned fish oil (penetrol with a straw, etc), to stop it corroding.

Thanks for the advice guys. I like the idea of the coilpack ignition system. I might look into this.
Gday Justin, How was the holiday mate? I didn't relise the bulkhead shape was different on the 92. I will get the tape measure out. The HEI is pretty bloody big though.
Workfront is a bit slow. New to a country town and all that. Slowly sucking in some landy owners !

Just buy an electronic ignition WITHOUT the coil in the dizzy cap, it will still be awfeully painful to work with but still doable, coil in the cap is a right crunt of an idea
