3.9 V8 engine oil cooler lines replacement

    Hi all,

The engine oil cooler lines on my 3.9 V8 are leaking pretty bad. They were leaking when I bought the car 2 years ago and now they are too bad to ignore.

The leak is from where the radiator hard lines connects to the hoses. Mainly the lower hose.
I assume that getting them made by Pirtek would be cheaper than buying replacements.
So would it be possible to remove the hoses and fit bungs in order to continue to use the car while I take the old ones to get copied by Pirtek?

Would the bung on the outflow of the engine side blow out? Is it an actual pump or just a flow of another kind?

Anyone know the size/threads on the engine and radiator?

    Thanks

No you can't put a Bung in
The oil passess from pump thru radiator thru to motor
The only way would be to "Loop" it from "Pump to motor" (so to speak) No connection to radiator

Any Hydrolic place can do the job ... But get it done
When the hose blows .. you have "60 seconds" before the motor is stuffed (figure of speech) .. I lost one on a Saturday .... Oil everywhere BIG time

Best way is to remove them, as they will need to "copy" them

    My 2c anyway

    Justin;

Make sure you're sitting down when Pirtek techs tell you how much it's going to cost you to get them copied

    BMI ( ( British Motor Importers )) Prices for Oil cooler lines;

    ESR1672 ..........$44.23 ex GST
    ESR1671 ..........$45.98 ex GST

Does your vehicle have the small adaptor plate between the Oil Filter and the housing , if so just remove this plate and hose fittings with it and screw on a conventional Z9 oil Filter as once you remove this oil cooler adaptor plate it is back to conventional set-up. The only reason you have to fit the squat short oil filter on these models is because of the extra length that the adaptor plate creates. That is how it is one the 3.9 V8 that i have you will just be running around with the oil passing through the oil cooler in this set-up once you have renewed the lines just put the adaptor plate back in and return to conventional set-up with the short filter.

    Thanks Guys.

Mike thanks for that. I didn't realise it was that serious. I didn't know it was the only output from the pump. I thought it would have just diverted some for cooling.

Khos I called BMI and the price quoted was $175 delivered for the pair. The part numbers are
    Engine to Cooler
    PBP101150
    Cooler to engine
    PBP101160
The numbers you quoted are for the 93-94 V belt 3.9
    Thanks though.
My local parts place quoted about the same but will have none for at least 3 weeks when the next UK shipment comes in.

Hwalker I wish it were that easy on mine. One of the hoses attaches to the underside of the block and the other is nearby in the block somewhere.

I thought when they made new lines that they would be able to just cut the solid line back a bit and replace the flexible part. I don't know much about how hydraulic lines are made though.

Go to Land Rover parts - Home. Follow the links to your vehicle and you will find what you need.
Prices arent too bad, but quality is pretty good too.
Think it would be cheaper than hydraulic shop as there is a few metal tube runs needed plus you need the o rings too.

Pirtek ect will most likely replace the flexible hose and leave the steel stand pipe intake. They normally cut the hose from the pipe and install compression ring type fittings on the pipe and this allows the new flexible hose to be installed. This is a good soultion because it eliminated the crimp join and makes the flexible
    hose a replaceable part.

This "shouldn't" cost more the 50 clams a hose.

I've been through this with my 3.9 this year. Although I was heading home from the coast when the auto cooler lines burst mmm brakes what brakes - have now replaced all the hoses. We just had a mobile mob come out and do them - it was not cheap, but it was quick and easy, and they do a great job.

A year ago, I bought some barbed fittings from my local LR guys, brazed them onto the old pipes and pushed on new hose. No clamps required.

I've got my bus going in next week to have mine changed as well. The bottom one is leaking quite badly so the disco is sitting in the car port waiting.
