And yes, oil the seal on the new filter, spin it on till it stops then 'nip' it up by hand 1/4-1/2 turn. No need to go tighter.
what he said but without the fat hands

I have that plus there is a pipe just underneath which I couldn't move. This is what also stopped me from getting the tensioner on. I was only able to get one hand on an angle from behind and only my fingers from the side.

Tombie & Phil , I'd love to see whether you could have gotten your mits onto this cos' the reason I wanted to get it so tight was because this is where the 3.5 ltrs of missing oil has apparently leaked out!

Yep, I remembered smeared the oil seal before putting it on too

I wanted to do a simple fuel filter and oil and oil filter change today. Figure about an hour for the lot, maybe 2.

Fist thing that went wrong was that the universal CAV style filter and housing from Ryco has smaller female fittings so all the hoses wont screw in! Could have sworn that the R2132UA had been used by others here. Also notice that the little arrows on the R2132UA indicating fuel flow are the opposite to the ones on the original? What the?

So I put everything back together and think OK, I'll do the oil and filter which must be a no-brainer. I notice that the filter is tucked in behind the turbo but I can just manage to get my hand in there without taking off the heatshield to unscrew it. The thing is as loose as! Check the oil level...what level! It doesn't even register on the stick!

Drain the oil, about 4 liters maybe a bit more. Wonder why the oil indicater light hasn't been flashing since it works when starting the car. Anyway, try to put the filter on but now can't get it right so i have to take the heatshield off anyway. (Footnote, one of the heatshield bolts is in a really dumb place facing right in towards the firewall).

Finally get the filter screwed on but there is just no room to get one of those tensioners underneath and onto the filter. Now I know why the previous filter was so loose!

Anyone have a fix for this? Are there tensioners/looseners out there that only use a thin strap?

So much for my lazy Sunday!

    Cheers, Pete'
Be careful, if you are using the cav type filter with the glass bowl, td5's run hot fuel, when hot glass hit's cold water, well I'll leave it to your imagination.

Auto barn sells these for under 10 dollars. They get into the space (with a few seconds of fiddling) , and unscrew them with ease.

not enough room in the D2 engine bay for it, there is heaps of room in the 110 engine bay by comparison

Originally I cut down the handle on a elcheapo oil filter wrench went in next to the firewall and unscrewed it that way, the next time I used the rope trick, which I have successfully used ever since.

for my td5 disco i just hack-sawed a 4 inch section off the metal band style oil filter tool, directly opposite the handle. this has worked great for me.

    Thanks for the tip Simon.

Aaron, I'll go check that out today too. Failing all this, it's pants off and belt on!
