Question Ugly Oil Leak after Towing

My 300Tdi auto Disco has 230,000 kms on it and is due for a service. Today I towed a heavy car-trailer full of furniture (mostly cheap bookshelves and a lounge suite - so not a huge weight) about 60Kms , including some serious hills. The Disco didn't like it much... down to 40kph at the steepest parts. The transmission overtemp light (which I never knew I had) came on several times during the journey but always went off again soon after the grade eased. When I got to my destination I saw oil dripping and the engine was making an extra 'ticking' noise I hadn't heard before. When I opened the bonnet there was what looked like a bucketfull of engine oil all over the rh chassis member and steering linkage. Seems to be coming from somewhere around the oil filter area but I really couldn't tell. The dipstick showed the oil was still present but at the low mark. The Disco is now parked and I'm wondering how to diagnose and fix this.
    All considered guidance appreciated.

Thanks for your quick response rangieman - the oil pressure switch was fairly clean so I don't think it's the culprit.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll go back to where I left the Disco and do some cleaning and inspection. It could well be the oil cooler hose - that would fit the spray pattern of the oil - if so what's the best way to fix these? Replace or repair?

Okay, if it's the hoses I'll get a place in Lithgow to make replacements. Thanks.
