I can't give you a definitive answer but looking at the WSM I can see that the arrangement of gears is different on the shaft 1st and reverse. Also the LT77 uses a straight cut gear for reverse where the R380 is helical cut.

I would say that if you have an LT77 in serviceable condition then you should swap it into the defender. Then again where did the LT77 come from a defender of Disco? The gear selector arrangement is different on an R380 from a disco to a defender I expect it might be the same with the LT77.

Some one authoritive will come along soon.

    • The LT77 is not as strong as the R380 aparently.
    • There are differences in the position of the gearstick between RR LT77 and Defender R380
    • As there are differences between the diesel and V8 petrol gearboxes.

You need to be swapping like for like, although the combination engine/gearbox/transfer will sit on the same points on the chassis side rails.

I am pretty sure it wont swap over.

I also think the conversion from R380 to lt77 is not totally straight forward either. From what I recall the R380 is slightly longer. I think there are a number of other issues aswell, but I cant recall what they are.

    Its not worth the hassle...

get the box out and fix it or replace it with the same....

the only boxes that swapped easily were series rover boxes with other series rover boxes and LT85's and 95's even then you have to make sure you get the right type diesel for diesel and petrol for petrol...

the 77 is about the weakest box of the coilers.

Can the 77 box be made stronger ?
Were there any mods brought out for it ?

marginally but its like saying cold butter is stronger than cool butter and if its a later box its already been done.

you might try tim at landroves only I have a vauge recolection of a convo I had with him re replacing the LT77 when i toasted reverse.... I think you can do some minor trickery to get the lt85 to bolt onto a v8

IMHO the lt85 is about half way between the 77 and the LT95 for strength and about 2/3rds between the 77 and the R380 (in favor of the R380)

    Exact answer to your question....

NO.... it wont... No part in the LT77 is the same as the R380... except bolts and clips....
All the shafts, gears and other crap is different.
    Hope this helps....
