I can't give you a definitive answer but looking at the WSM I can see that the arrangement of gears is different on the shaft 1st and reverse. Also the LT77 uses a straight cut gear for reverse where the R380 is helical cut.
I would say that if you have an LT77 in serviceable condition then you should swap it into the defender. Then again where did the LT77 come from a defender of Disco? The gear selector arrangement is different on an R380 from a disco to a defender I expect it might be the same with the LT77.
