    Hi All
I have a problem with my 2002 td5 auto. Engine starting problem, sometimes it starts fine and sometime it will not start, I've replaced the glow plugs and fuel pump and a new fuel line. The pump is really noisy and the fuel system sounds like it has air in it. When it is hard to start the only way to get it to go is to leave the ignition key on and let the fuel pump prime up the fuel. Replacing the parts above helped for about 2 days before it became hard to start again.
Has anyone ever heard of this one?

Take your fuel filter off and have a look to see if there is a second O-Ring on the top of the filter or stuck in the filter housing.

Sometimes the centre O-Ring from the old filter can stick to the filter housing when you remove it and when you put the new filter on, it will cause an air gap as it doesn't seat properly, because of the extra O-Ring.

    Cheers Baz.

    Hi Redback

Thanks for that, I'll give it a look. The car has always been serviced by the dealer I purchased it from new. Lately I get the feeling that they have no interest in the older
model cars. Recently they did fit a new fuel filter.
I'll check it out tomorrow and I'll let you know if it works.

Could you have a crook tank of diesel - too much parafin - or just the diesel separated in the cold weather? Erich.

Possibly aerated fuel, it means that there is a possible combustion leak into the fuel rail from a faulty injector sealing washer. Does it get worse when you put the vehicle under load for a while, like up a steep long hill?
Also, the fuel filter, as mentioned, may have been fitted without the small centre sealing ring, this may cause a noise from the pump and difficult starting also.

Smile Discovery series 2 TD5 starting problem

    Hi All

I found the problem with the cars starting difficulties. it turned out to be the copper washers on the end of the injectors (cylinders no. 2 & 3). We replaced all five washers with new genuine parts. The cars also feels better to drive.
No problems to report of, the car is running great so I think they might have been leaking for some time.
The parts we replaced were the fuel rail, fuel lines, fuel filter housing and fuel pump.
Each time we replaced a part the car would run OK for a couple of days, then it would start to suck air again. Totally confusing.
I thank you guy's who responded and trying to help out.
Problem solved. Just for the record Peter Davis from Roving Mechanical is a genius.

    Hi all,
I have a TD5 Disco with 200k on the dial. I have similar trouble as jim. Hard starting, no power under load, screaming fuel pump and leaking fuel pressure regualtor (FPR). My mechanic has replaced the fuel pump and FPR and says that fuel is entering the sump. Must be only very small amounts. He has taken out all my injectors and sent them away for testing, as he wants to make sure it is not faulty injectors. Could it just be the seals or could it be likely that the injectors have had the royal Richard? This could turn out to be a bloody expensive exercise.

Hi, Anu update on my problem. Replaced fuel pump, FPR, took injcetors out and got them cleaned and made sure all was good. Finally replaced injector seals and seems to be ok. Not leaking any oil now or fuel. Still think that the tdi300 is a much better motor for repairs and less problems. If any body has a good tdi300 discovery for sale please let me know.
