    Question Rear windows intermittent fault

First I want to say that I love my D1.

I've fixed the Cruise Control thanks to an informative thread on this site.

So now I'm looking to fix the electric rear windows.

    The front windows work fine.

Using the centre consol sometimes the rear windows work and sometimes they do not. Thankfully when they work after I've accidentally opened them I can get them shut again, if I do it quickly.

I've not wanted to play too much, in case I get them open and can not get them closed again.

Is there a diagnostic teat I can run through to find the fault?

Is there a simple wiring diagram so I can try and find a faulty earth (the most likely problem as its intermittent)?

I wouldn't be supprised if it was a cracked soldering joint on the window ECU. My D1 had the same problem and I decided I had to fix it when the rear windows wouldn't go back up one day and I had to leave them down. It was also an intermitent fault.

If you go to discoweb.org -- and then in the tech section you will find a tutorial under rear electric window. This will be able to step you through fixing the cracked solder.

It worked on my D1 and only took me 20min to pull it apart and reassemble. Good luck

OK the circuit board is out, it only took a couple of hours.

The link to the instructions was useful but I've a few tips for any one else trying this.

    1. Get some electrical contact cleaner and spray the small plug that will not shift for love nor money. Do this first.

    2. Remove the glove box and under panel for access. Takes 3 min and saves 20min of cussing.

    3. Remove the small green box under the Window ECU (sorry do not know what it is call/for). so you can tilt the WECU down not up to get the circuit board out.

    4. remove the side foot weld outer panel. Do this, with the green box removed and you can tilt the WECU down and slide the circuit board out of the housing with the small wire plug still attached.

    5. you now have lots of space and wire length to re-spray the small wire plug, attack it with a screw driver or three, bend, stress, strain, and generally hack at the small plug until it comes free.

Just as a matter of interest the solder joint that has failed on my unit is the same one as in the photo in the link. Do you think this is a manufacturing fault that should be covered by Land Rover

Geez sounds like you had a hard time but I take it solved the problem. When I did mine I just removed the glovebox and pulled the plug and the ECU came out really easily. Mine was also the exact same soldering joint so I think there might have been a manufacturing problem.

    Intermittent window issues

    Guys
My 98 S1 Disco had the same symptoms and I attacked it just as you propose...couldn't find anything..took it to TRS in Adelaide...they checked everything..nitz!!! Then by chance they threw in a replacement switch and da da!!! Apparently its really common for the switches to cark it about the same time, but nearly always rears first!! go figure when the fronts get used most, you'd reckon. Any way, just a thought to try the obvious first.

My rear window joint was the same also.

Apparently the joint that fails in the spider is also always the same.

A couple of stoners in the Lucas factory no doubt

Lucky they didn't work at Wabco

I have recently bought a disco 1 and love it have been having problems with my rear windows as well, pulled the circuit board out today and the previous owner has made a hell of a mess of it even scratching some of the green circuit paths. When i got it out a big section of the green part and some copper fell off (probably source of the problem) now the board is completely stuffed. Any ideas on where i could find a new one and how much should just hit up a landie wrecker?
