I too have been using a Watchdog for the last 6 months or so they are excellent.
Mine has the sensor mounted on the thermostat bolt and with the over temp alarm set at 88 degrees,
with heat soak the alarm will go off a little annoying but it usually shuts up in 30 seconds or so.
Haven't been through a Summer up here yet I suspect I will have to up the over temp buzzer threshold.
Well worth its money in my opinion

I got a little black box.
Has Low coolant alarm, block temp alarm, oil alarm, charge alarm and a couple of other options including auto shut down. I chose not to use the auto shut down.

The reason the alarm goes off with heat soak is because the sensor is on a thermostat housing bolt.
The circulating coolant keeps the housing cooler than the head/block until the engine is stopped,
then the temperatures equalise and the housing heats up and the alarm activates.
The thermostat housing is running at a significantly lower temperature than the cylinder head (88 v @95*)

The sensor should be directly on the cylinder head, preferable on the inlet side, away from the exhaust, sheilded from airflow.

If you mount it on the thermostat housing and you loose coolant the reading will first drop as the hot coolant leaks away.
(Same as the factory fitted temperature sensor)

Once heat soak has set in the reading will start to rise.
This time delay could be costly at highway speed in summer.

We run EMS unit here that originated in the aviation field.

It pretty much gives you everything:

    Oil temp and pressure
    Coolant temp and level
    Head temp
    Gearbox or transfer case temp
Battery Voltage or charge voltage rather
    Egt's
    Boost pressure
    roll and pitch

Can't get any better and all sensors are VDO's

    EMS

Do you have to drill a hole in the header tank to fit it?

Davy thanks for your advice some sound points indeed
The main issue is the lack of 10mm bolts on the inlet manifold site of a Rover V8.
Maybe I should use the Rocker cover bolt??
