Maybe I should have studied at Uni...

So spare a thought for those of us who had to put up with about four years of that. We did well to survive.

I only thought of that about ten minutes ago and you fella's had already said it
Although the couple of times I went we were in the Engineering section (doing some FEA modelling) and, well, lets face it, there are only blokes with plastic pocket protectors around there

Recall when I was on the farm we had a couple of vehicles that glazed up the first a 350 cu inch Perkins and a Nissan Patrol.
Both of which we thought were shagged with smoke /lack of power and general running like cr@p.
We gave the Perkins an overload for a couple of days not letting it labor but letting it work the old Nissan was flogged
mercilessly towing heavy trailers and they both came good seemed like they just needed to be worked.
Both of them never ran better

Thanks guys for all the replies - It looks like I must come and visit !! Girls....

The oil issue..... Magnatech is the recommended oil by LR !! As said it is partly Synthetic.

Maybe I didn't drive it hard enough from the start ! I never idled but also never went above 2400 rpm.

I had a careful look at the cylinders and rings this morning and took some pix, I'm struggling with the difference between glazing and polishing. Are these the same or not and if not what causes polishing - Blow-by?

From all the replies I'm now going to treat it right from the start and will hopefully get this engine run in. Should I be using the cheapest thickest oil I can find ?

magnatec? reccomended by rover as its semi synthetic for an engine that they previously reconed needed a fully synthetic oil?

it doesnt sound right to me that its glazed that quickly regardless of the oil you use.

if you babied it and didnt work it up to temp for the whole run in period that will do it but then so will failing to clean up and score the bores after a rebuild...

putting the big map in it and driving it like its stolen might get it to come good.

Not sure about the condition of that Big End it looks a bit rough for the description
The oil cant be that bad unless there is debris floating in the system
Are we looking at another issue here??

Dave so you would not agree on a fuelling issue here ie running with custom maps for the last 1500 km's ? causing it to glaze up.

Looking at the wear on the bearings it appears as metal on metal. There doesn't seem to be enough lubrication.
