    TD5 being naughty

    Hey gents

I'm having a bit of trouble with my newly installed TD5 (engine has less than 40K, and the installation in a Disco1 has about 6K, miles that is)

What a fantastic engine! We're really enjoying 25MPG and decent power (up here at 5000 feet above sea level!

The problem is every so often it decides to just run poorly, white unburnt fuel, rough and no power. I've checked the wastegate actuator and checked for oil in the wiring harness (clean as can be) I run with and without the MAF.

It seems as if it's turned off the fueling on an injector or two or the turbo just stops (I'll check that this afternoon)

It's also intermittant, gotta love that!

I'm guessing it's loosing something electrical but I thought I'd ask some of you that have a LOT more experience with these motors than I have to see if it sounds familiar.

I thought I'd add that it seems to happen at any throttle position, It will idle poorly, drive bad at part throttle and if you're "on it" is will cut out for a split second repeatedly.

The Nanocom has been delayed but I ecpect it will be here soon.

    Thanks in advance!!!

If the EGR system is still intact, it could be the EGR valve not closing properly.

There is a common problem in a D2 where the hose to the I/C delaminates internally and blocks air flow, although that ususally produces black smoke and doesn't usually affect idle. Another problem that affects power under load is fuel cut-out due to a failed boost modulator, but once again, not at idle or light throttle.

    Thanks Graeme

The EGR is gone with a new "snout" on the intake.

I could see where a delaminated hose could cause trouble, I'll have a look tomorrow in the Daylight. Most my hoses are silicone though.

It's definately white smoke, smells like kerosene or straight parrafin, it's almost as if the Turbo locks up. That tells me the injectors must be working and I get on the revs I can get it to knock..

Also it seems (on that turbo note) that if I'm a little "less gentle" it happens less frequently. But i can let off, like I would for a stop light it can happen right away. It hasn't happened in a place where I can pul straight over and pull the hose to the turbo and have a peek though.

    Another check.
Fill the fuel tank to the brim, run the motor and see if the fuel is aerating at the filler. If it is there is a problem with the seals on the injectors. The aeration is exhaust gas into the fuel system.
Easy fix if its an injector, some have had cracked heads.

Thanks for the tips Guys!!! I searced and searched and didn't find all of this!

I checked a bunch of connectors and testerday it ran without a hitch but last night it died completely, acted as if it's not getting fuel. Won't even start.
I'm going to go get her today and work on some of the things mentioned above.

Of course it now has to be cold for the next few days.
