Sounds like it could be a dry wheel bearing - which needs immediate investigation. Removing the hub cap and drive flange should show if this is the problem.

The other, les serious possibility (perhaps more likely) is a stone or similar lodged in the brake and rubbing on the disc, or the mud shield itself bent or loose and rubbing against the disc. In this case the remedy should be obvious, although you might have to take the wheel off to see it.

Try jacking that wheel and seeing if you can make the noise turning the wheel by hand, and if you can see if you can see where it is coming from.

Like John said could be a bearing. When I converted mine the other week on my 110 I used a little HTB grease on the bearings/spindle as well cause it will take time for the oil to feed up to the bearings.

Did you replace the bearings with new ones and also did you remove/destroy the spindle seal?

You do mention that oil was coming out the flanges so thats a good indication that the bearings are getting oil.Maybe the disk cover backing plate is slightly bent and rubbing on the disk.

As for the swivel pin bearings oil will lube those as well, did you top up the swivel with oil or just the diff?
All I can say is pull it down again and have a look..

Anyway mate goodluck Iam sure someone on here will have another/better answer for you then mine.

Is there a seal in the axle housing?, that stops the diff oil getting into the hubs.

If there is it would need to be removed.

On defenders there is a fill and drain plug on the swivel housing to fill with oil...Well mine does and its a 1994

You can remove the inner axle seal and fill the diff with extra oil to allow for the bearings and cv's but I was advised against it so I left it in.But each to there own.
