I wouldn't be driving it at all personally - Tdis are very sensitive to overheating. I'd be traybacking it in.
My parents have taken my S1 Tdi Disco up to their house on mid-north coast, and are returning home at the moment (well, they are at Fredrickton, just out of Kempsey) and it has started to overheat on the temp gauge, opened bonnet and they say their is clearly coolant dripping from behind the engine, lots of steam and smells not particularly good, but as far as they can tell there isn't oil mixed in with the leaking coolant.
When they removed the expansion cap, air was bubbling up through it.
Any thoughts of what the problem might be, and the best course of action?
They have topped up the coolant level and will limp the 5km into Kempsey where there is a better chance of help.![]()

I saw it straight after I posted and had a read of it, and it sounded like it could be a culprit!
They noticed and stopped as soon as they saw the temp start to move so it hadn't heated up too much by that stage, I told them they weren't allowed to let it past 2/3 up the gauge, and from where Freddo is its downhill so letting it roll down the hill it didn't rise again.
Straight into a mechanic on the outer of town and first thoughts are it looks like a heater hose which is slightly relievingand I'll ignore what the mechanic said about land rovers and reliability when they got there
haha!
If everything comes out OK, think about fitting a Low coolant alarm.
The standard temp gauge may not be very good as an early warning in a loss of coolant situation.
For future reference don't trust the temp gauge. If a coolant leak is noticed it is stop and tilt tray it. I'd suggest as above a low coolant alarm and an engine watch dog from a recent thread also.
