Thanks, so the transfer case is strong enough on them? How strong? I could go to RR axles and coils, that would be a nice setup. Or if it is a Toyota box I could get bellhousing and run a Lexus V8.... Options options....

I know people who run 5.0L V8s in front of series transfers - no problems.

Well that's what I want to hear, what diffs do they run then? I have always like Windsor V8's and if this bellhousing allows the same bolt pattern that may be an option for me.

Well on that note ... Can you fit a Ford EFI V8 out of a 92 onwards ? ...

I could assuming the bellhousing pattern is the same as Inline 6 Ford 250 engines, trolling the net again to find the answer. That would be a rather brilliant combination I think, only weak point being the axles, but could deal to them later.

Well looks like I am **** out of luck on this one. 6 Cyl bellhousing pattern is different to V8. Not sure where to go from here now. Don't really want a 6 cylinder, and the fact it has a 5 speed really makes me want a V8 in there to push the boundaries a little, might have to take the bellhousing off and see what can be done to make a V8 pattern..... but what V8? Rover or Ford??

Rover - VERY cheap and true to the brand
Ford - More money, more weight, but more grunt and tuning potential

Bung in a Chrysler Australia Hemi 6 4.3 litre (265). Light, compact, bullet proof, and with the right breathing gear and pre-emissions controls camshaft, will rev like a turbine. Easy 300 tractable horsepower available to any competent engine builder. They have from memory, an SAE No.3 bell housing pattern.

The 1UZ-FE is becoming a really popular conversion here - although I haven't heard of any being put into Rovers. They're meant to be a really good motor. You'd need to check, though I was under the impression that these were compatible with Hilux gearboxs, or the transmission that comes with it can be adapted to suit a hilux transfer. I'm not sure about strength with the Hilux gear, though I'd assume if you're not beating it up in the bush it'd be ok. This output on the transfer then affects your axle options to keep the propshafts and their angles appropriate.

If you're after a V8 conversion, then I wouldn't let it be dictated by the gearbox which is in it. There may be better options, and there are gearboxs everywhere. Then again, I may be in the non-purist minority.

I think that a 1UZ-FE into a shorty soft top with Hilux axles would be a hell of a lot of fun to burn around in. If you ran 31x10.5 or whatever on Landcruiser offset 15x8's you could also probably just cover the wheels with Defender flares. Hmmmm. I wanna build that now!!!
    Cheers

Slunnie, how hard is the Hilux axle conversion, I can get RR front and rear axles for probably half cost as one Hilux axle here. So if there is no great benefit I would just use the RR ones, but I know it is hard to connect the steering gear if reatining Leafs, hence the thoughts of going coils.
