To date, and I have undone many of these, this is the only method I have found that works.

Thanks JC , so the Big countersunk head is acting as a taper , have to get hold of another alen key as my Kinchrome alen key snapped , think I apllied a little too much force ...mind you the bugger had a short handle

Also, It is an imperial allen key size, not 5.5mm Although this will work, it is slightly too small and may round off in the bolt The correct size escapes me now, I have one in my 'special tools' section of the toolbox but it is something like '11/32"' or some obscure size like that
As I said, the 5.5mm will do it but BE CAREFULL or you will be getting out the drill...

Half the battle with rovers is working out if nuts & bolts are AF or Metric from memory 5.5 mm was quite a tight Fit

Khos, yes you can put the tappets back in once you have the valley cover off, but sometimes it may not be clear which goes in which hole and that is reasonable important.
When you get down to where the cam and followers are visible take a close up clear photo of some cam lobes ie the points and the bottom of some followers.

Nothing seems to be straight forward

oh... the fun we have with our landrovers
Grind it cool to produce another flat edge and go again. If the bent bit snapped then remove it all and use the allen key in a socket to drive it instead. After JC's tip it may keep you going.

arrrgh , I'm about to douce the car with petrol and set it up alight ,

only Kidding , I love that rangie to bits. anyhow.

I've removed the 4 retaining bolts off the top of the rocker arm and can't for life of me get the valley cover off , do I still need to undo the 2 alen key bolts inside ?

PhillipA , I removed the rocker arm off and then pulled Pushrods out very carefully on the drivers side so followers remain in their seats.

This is probably the best piece of advice , I should have bought a 2nd engine and re-built it and then swapped engines , I have no wheels ATM and rangie is blocking the disco to reverse out from driveway so I can't drive either

Khos, You do not have to take the plugs out in the photos. They are core plugs from the casting.
re having no car. You will not do that again will you.

Yes very good advice This is why I'm getting another Rangie same as mine before I start on heavy mods.
If you not up and running on 4 to 6 th Jan I will bring a stiff bar down so we can move the Rangie and the Disco can be released.
Ive got a spare running 3.5 here that would get you mobile wile you rebuild the 3.9 but not efi Won't have slots in ports for injectors. Is in a 82 2 Door with a buggered gear box.
