Feel your pain but it is a known issue.
I was one on here who removed the bolt just to be certain it had been done.
Hope you get it sorted with out to much pain.
I just had both my LR's radiators,cooling systems serviced,cost me a grand,why?because it's summer.How many people will boil engines this year because they didn't care,worry about their cars?.The one thing I have learnt dealing with the public is when something goes wrong it's always someone else's fault. I'm sorry to hear about that, Dave. It happened to my D2 just over a year ago after owning it for only about 6 weeks. I know how it feels and it gets you down for sure. But you do move on. It didn't put me off Land Rovers (nothing could do that) but the D2 gave so much trouble it's made me so frightened of Td5s that I'm not sure I could ever have one again.
The TD5 is a great engine, but it seems it needs extra special love an attention to some extent to avoid issues like this. But as the others said the main issues are well known and eaily sorted so problems are avoided.
Same with me...did a bit of searching on here, found out about the problem and asked my mechanic to check it to make sure. Cost me a bit...and it turns out after he dropped the oil and took the sump off....that it had already been done!!! :o:D Oh well, at least I have the peace of mind that it wont be a problem.:)
Sorry that it happened with your vehicle, but I think you need to know your vehicle, know its problems and fix them asap...especially if you are to rely on it offroad and in remote locations. I dont have a lot of sympathy for people that think a 4wd is a vehicle you just start and go and dont think about preventative maintence. You gotta get involved with your vehicle and its servicing history...
