    300tdi "whines" even in neutral!

My 1995 Disco 300tdi auto with 307 000 kms has developed a "whine." It was first noted when accelerating in soft sand on my recent Fraser Island trip.

It is noticeable when accelerating on the road in 1st and 2nd mainly and isn't really noticeable when just lightly cruising at a constant speed.

I just tried revving the engine to 3000 rpm in neutral stationary and I could hear it clearly then as well.

I was thinking it was just a almost worn out T/C or diff or something but should it whine when stationary if this was the case?

Could it be turbo related? The hoses seem all OK!

Any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated as the wife does most of the regular driving in it and I don't what something to go bang when she is in command.

    Thanks

    Sean

Drop off the serpentine belt & give the engine a run to see if the noise has gone.
If it has, you know it's something that the belt drives.

    Probably something like your alternator.

Thanks for your input but I hope not. It cost me $600 for a new one 18 months ago.... although at least that would only cost $600 to fix and not a lot more from something else more sinister.

I will try the belt off test to try and eliminate all the bits on the front of the engine.

Could it be a buggered bearing on the tensioner or something simple like that? Do bearings whine?

    Cheers

Tensioners normally squeek and grind, you may have sand in the alternator, try givng it a blow out, mine has had a whine on the odd ocasion after going for a swim or copping a splash of mud, a good hose out and shes right.

For sand though I would try air first.

in addition to any of the above, water pump possibly ?...bearings tend to go about same time as the alternator.

The water pump might be worth investigating further as I can see a little weep of coolent occasionally down the front of the block, turbo side.

The "fixes" are getting cheaper... a WP only runs $150. (I think?)

Check out the power steer pump as well. Rev the engine slightly in neutral whilst turning the steering to full lock on either side. The pressure the pump develops will surely enhance any noises from the pump.
