Check out the power steer pump as well. Rev the engine slightly in neutral whilst turning the steering to full lock on either side. The pressure the pump develops will surely enhance any noises from the pump.

I held the revs at 2000 rpm and turned the steering wheel lock to lock with no change in the tune of the whine.

I have noisey bearings in my tensioners (screw driver to the ear test) but they kinda rattle rather than whine!

The suspects are 1: alternator (perhaps brushes?) 2: power steering pump 3: water pump.

The old girl is going to my friendly mechanic tomorrow for a diagnosis.

I had the bearings replaced in the 2 idler pulleys (tensioners?) and the 300tdi almost sounded like a petrol.

I couldn't believe the difference it made.
