Check the injector wiring harness for oil contamination would be the first thing.
Looking to see if anyone can point me in the correct direction.
I was heading out west (3 hr drive) from Brisbane, got 2/3 the way when the Discovery (Dec 2003) starter to vibrate and noticeably lost power,
we could still drive but you needed to be at 2500 revs or higher if you wanted any pickup.
There is no additional smoke or anything else out of the ordinary, visibly.
Looks and sounds like it's running on 4 cyc's, even at idle.
We put a bottle of injector cleaner in but it's made no difference.
I have access to a workshop but no one has Discovery experience.
So guys what do you think the problem is and what should I do?

You've checked for the "oil in the injector harness" issue ?
That's the most common cause of this.

Yup, the ol oil in the harness trick again - just had mine done! Vroooooooommmmmmmm.

Played with the wiring harness and it came good, "for a short time"
The question is does it just need cleaning and what part in particular?
Do they ever just fail?

The fault is that the oil can get into the loom under the rocker cover. It them propogates all teh way along through the loom until it hits the ecu plugs where it messes up the signals sent by the ECU to the injectors.
It is a very common issue on TD5's
You can clean the ecu plugs out with some sort of contact cleaner and this will resolve it in the short term.
You will need to remove the rocker cover and change the injector loom (about $140 from LR)
Then if you clean out the plugs a few times and do your best to clean the oil from the main loom it should be fixed!!
