Either installing the wrong way ... or .... your not knocking the seal down to the bottom

Suppose to be 4mm below the hub metal lip

Try using emery tape on the surface the seal runs on when you strip it down again.

As for putting the seal a few mm into the hub, the seals I have always bought have a lip around the outer edge that fits the machined bit on the hub. This makes it perfectly flush with the outer surface of the hub. Different brands I guess.

Never had a problem doing it this way except on one hub that I had to pull down and emery tape which has been fine since.

Seal was probably not seated at the correct depth...

I thought this too when replacing my front hub seals htc3511.

They definitely have to go down 4mm. This lip will press in and supposedly is the mud slinger. When I didn't seat it correctly this lip was rubbing hard.

Luckily I put a post on about the depth of the seal and pulled the wheel down the next day. I had only travelled a few km's but already the seal was taking a beating so I was glad to get it early and avoid oil on the rotors.

let speedi sleeve be your friend

    OK,

there is one definite & complete solution for this problem...

    1. call into you friendliest tame local bearing company (with stub axle if you have to) and ask for a speedi sleeve....

    2. ask for the correct installation compound for it too...

    3. install it following the directions (give compound proper time to cure)....

it comes with an installation tool (a sleeve to tap it on with)

seems to cure the problem long term

(of course you can polish the grooves & pits, or replace the bearing surface if you want to but why when a practical solution is at hand)

    hope this helps - Laurie

If you are using the seal RTC 3511 push it all the way in. It is a double lipped seal with springs on both lips, the outer lip mustn't sit proud of the hub,or it will wear. The seal will only go down as far as it should, as there is a ridge it seats on. Interesting when I replaced mine with an RTC 3511 seals, the old OE ones (with the slinger)had the slinger worn off because the seal was positioned too far out.

in addition to the above... ensure that your axle breathers actually breathe

.... and lube the seal lips before sliding the hub into place
